This workshop will explore ways to protect water quality and discuss methods to treat stormwater. Low Impact Development techniques and natural stream channel design solutions will also be introduced. In addition, participants will tour the Flat Creek Stream Restoration and Greenway project under construction and observe techniques being installed. These stream restoration features should correct excessive sedimentation, over-widening, incised banks, decreased fish and wildlife habitat, and unsafe public access. Wear field clothes and join us to learn about how to protect water quality in Black Mountain!

There are a series of regional commodity meetings scheduled this fall with Dean Johnny Wynne of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State University. One is scheduled at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center for December 3, 2008 beginning at 11 a.m.

About the Workshops
These workshops will address local challenges and present natural channel design solutions to stream impairments including excessive sedimentation, over-widening, incised banks, decreased fish and wildlife habitat, and unsafe public access. Both levels will address elements of natural stream channel design, design innovations, implementation techniques, and riparian plantings. In addition, participants will tour the Richland Creek Stream Restoration project under construction and observe techniques being installed.

Stream Restoration Concepts Introduction Workshop is specific to developers, land owners, and natural resource managers who can benefit from learning about watershed and stream restoration concepts.

Stream Restoration Concepts Advanced Workshop will be tailored to design professionals that will explore stream restoration specific to the mountains and related design considerations and implications, particularly focusing on the thermal impacts to trout waters and innovation in-stream structures. This level will also offer continuing education credit to planners, landscape architects, engineers, and foresters.

Storm Water Program

Attention to landscapers and landscape maintenance professionals!!! If you are looking at a new niche, this may be the program for you to attend. Stormwater BMP Inspection & Maintenance Certification.
Larger cities and towns across the State of North Carolina must manage rainfall that runs off roads, streets and parking lots. This runoff is called stormwater. To manage stormwater, many stormwater treatment devices have been built. You may have seen these as you have been driving in urban areas. Retention ponds, bioretention areas, stormwater wetlands, permeable pavement, and level spreaders are devices that are commonly used. These devices must have annual maintenance to continue to function properly. Some municipalities are considering hiring contractors to do this work, but it is a specialized area, making education and training important before you begin. As a result of his training you will:

* Understand stormwater and how it affects drinking water quality
* Understand stormwater management devices used in North Carolina and how they function
* Understand maintenance requirements of each stormwater practice
* Be eligible to take a test at the conclusion of the training to be certified

This workshop offers 7 PDHs (professional development hours) for professional engineers and surveyors, authorized by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. Other professionals may appeal to their respective boards to obtain professional education credits. We will provide a certificate of attendance at the conclusion of the workshop.

Beginnings

Western North Carolina has been blessed with several clean streams. Unfortunately, these streams haven't always been as clean, as they are now, but due to a lot of different initiatives, many of our streams are beginning to return to high quality water ways. Most of the citizens on our area are interested in measures that they can implement to be good stewards of this valuable resource.

This blog will allow sharing of information through articles related to water quality and conservation that impact the entire region. Blog authors (predominately NC State University educators) will post information about: up-coming events, news articles, short video or audio presentations, as well as links to other water quality and conservation resources.
